Woodlawn Mall was an enclosed shopping centre in Dartmouth, NS. In the early 1990s, the mall was partially demolished and turned into Woodlawn Plaza, which is a strip mall anchored by Giant Tiger.
History[]
Woodlawn Mall opened in the early 1970s with the anchors of Metropolitan and SaveEasy. The mall was shaped like an L. A centre court was in the middle of the concourse, with a lunch counter in it. There was also a Lawtons Drugs. Directly attached to the mall was a plaza section, which had Consumers Distributing and a medical centre.
Inside the mall, there was mostly local tenants, most national retailers were at already established malls in the area such as Penhorn Mall, Mic Mac Mall and Tacoma Centre. Because of this, the mall was never too popular since there was so much competition from other malls. A Sunday flea market was also hosted at the mall, this later moved to Penhorn Mall after the mall closed.
In the early 1980s, Loblaws decided to try their new No Frills stores in Atlantic Canada by rebranding select Save Easy locations to No Frills. The location at Woodlawn Mall was one of the locations to be rebranded.
In the late 1980s, Metropolitan began to struggle because of competition from similar retailers like Zellers and Woolco. The location at Woodlawn Mall eventually closed, and the mall was converted to Woodlawn Plaza in the early 1990s. Some stores from the mall, like Lawtons Drugs, Dartmouth Regional Library, Deluxe Laundromat, and New Penny Coin Shop moved into the new plaza. Consumers Distributing moved to a new shopping centre nearby which was anchored by Real Atlantic Superstore and Zellers.
A few years after the plaza opened, a Business Depot (Later rebranded to Staples) opened a standalone location within the property. After this, the plaza was renamed to Staples Business Depot Plaza for awhile, the name was changed back to Woodlawn Plaza in 2009.
In 2010, long time tenant Lawtons Drugs moved out of the plaza. The space was later replaced with a fitness centre. The next year, a Giant Tiger opened in the plaza, this became one of most popular tenants.
Today, the plaza continues to operate with many different retailers and tenants, and they will continue to operate for years to come.
