Westgate, formerly Westgate Mall was a one-level shopping mall 5.4 miles (8.6 km) northeast of downtown Allentown, Pennsylvania, between Schoenersville Road, Westgate Drive and Catasauqua Road in Bethlehem, a suburb of Allentown. The mall currently has two open anchors which is Harbor Freight and Weis Markets.
Mall History[]
The original structures on the present mall grounds were erected in 1964, with George's IGA opening its doors in 1967 and Hess's being constructed on the site in 1971. The formation of Westgate Mall in 1973 linked George's IGA and Hess's as anchor stores. Newberry's joined the mall as a third anchor in 1972.
On February 12, 1977, a three-alarm fire ravaged Westgate Mall, resulting in the loss of 18 stores and injuries to several firefighters. The fire, deemed arson, was halted only by a firewall, and despite investigations, no suspect was apprehended. The total damage to the mall was estimated at $2,857,452.
In 1992, George's IGA underwent a change in ownership, being sold to King's IGA, with plans for upgrades. The following year, in 1994, Hess's was transformed into Bon-Ton, and in 1994, IGA was converted into Weis Markets. Newberry's became Dollar Zone in 2001, but unfortunately, Dollar Zone closed its doors in April 2002.
A significant event unfolded on June 4, 2002, when the family of Harold Campbell sought control of Westgate Mall, leading to legal action by the mall's two managers, who had held power of attorney since 1997. The matter was resolved later in 2002, with the managers retaining control.
Westgate Farmers Market made its debut at the mall in November 2011. In June 2013, City View Capital LLC acquired most of the mall for $2.3 million. In December 2014, PREIT, the owner of the land housing Bon-Ton, sold it to an affiliate of the mall's owners for $3.85 million. Sky Zone Trampoline Park opened in August 2015.
Bon-Ton closed its Westgate location in June 2018, and in October 2018, Westgate Mall changed hands, being purchased by Onyx Equities LLC and PCCP LLC for $30 million. In May 2021, Weis Markets relocated from its existing mall space to part of the former Bon-Ton space.
In 2023, the enclosed portion of Westgate Mall was permanently closed and demolished, the land was then transformed into a shopping center renaming the property from Westgate Mall to Westgate.
