A Wegmans On Tilghman Street In Allentown, Pennsylvania

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a privately held American supermarket chain; it is headquartered in Gates, New York. As of September 2018, Wegmans has 98 stores in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions, in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. Founded in 1916 in Rochester, Wegmans has appeared on Fortune's annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list since the list first appeared in 1998. In 2018, the company was ranked No. 2 on the list of best companies to work for, behind Salesforce.com.

A Wegmans store on Fairport-Marsh Rd. in East Rochester, New York. This store originally opened in 1958 and is presently the oldest operating store in the chain.

Wegmans was originally founded in 1916 by John and Walter Wegman, who named their company Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Company. In 1968, the chain expanded into Syracuse and in 1977 in Buffalo. Their first store outside of New York opened in Pennsylvania in 1993 and additionally in New Jersey in 1999. Continuing south, they opened their first Virginia location in 2004 and first Maryland location in 2005.

In 2011, they opened their first New England location in Northborough, Massachusetts on October 16th. In 2014, they opened additional Massachusetts locations in Newton (April 27) and Burlington (October 26).

Currently in the process of expanding further south, a store in Raleigh, North Carolina is scheduled to open September 29, 2019.
