Walmart Canada is the Canadian division of Walmart. They operate 403 stores in every province and territory except for Nunavut.
History[]
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Walmart was rapidly expanding throughout the US. So they decided to expand into Canada. Instead of opening stores one by one and slowly expanding into Canada, they decided to buy the Canadian division of Woolco from the F.W. Woolworth company.
They ended up buying 122 leases of Woolco, the reason they didn't buy the 22 other Woolco locations is because they were ether unionized or they were located in downtown areas, such as the location in Scotia Square in Halifax, NS. They ended up selling some of the leases to Zellers, and the rest were converted to Walmart Canada locations.

The original CEO of Walmart Canada claimed "his management team took a limping chain and turned it into the Walmart powerhouse that became a game-changer on the Canadian business scene. Retailers changed, Canadian manufacturers faced demands and volumes they had not seen before, real estate transitioned from enclosed malls to big-box plazas"
In 2006, Walmart started opening Walmart Supercentre locations in Canada. This resulted in many of the original Woolco / Walmart locations to close and move to supercentre locations.
In 2011, Walmart bought 39 leases of Zellers stores from Target Canada, throughout 2012, these were converted to Walmart and Walmart Supercentre locations. Some of the non-supercentre locations from this deal have since closed in the past few years.
In 2015, Walmart Canada bought 13 former Target Canada locations and turned them into Walmart locations

Walmart[]
A standard Walmart Canada location, they vary from 51 000 to 150 000 square feet. They don't offer frozen goods or fruit and vegetables. These stores only make up 59 of the 403 Walmart Canada stores.
Walmart Supercentre[]
- A Walmart Supercentre Canada location, they vary from 67,000 to 225,000 square feet. They offer a full grocery department, usually have a McDonald's or Burger King in them, and usually have a garden centre.
