Uptown Centre (formerly Fredericton Mall) is an open-air shopping centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The shopping centre is currently anchored by Sobeys, Staples, PetSmart, and Marshalls. Until 2006, Uptown Centre was called Fredericton Mall, an enclosed mall, which was anchored by Zellers, Metropolitan, and Sobeys.
History[]
Fredericton Mall opened in 1971. It was the first enclosed shopping mall in the Fredericton, predating Regent Mall by 5 years. The malls original anchors were Metropolitan, Sobeys, and Zellers. Originally, Fredericton Mall was very popular, and had many national retailers.
In 1976, Regent Mall opened directly across the Fredericton Bypass freeway. As this mall was bigger, Fredericton Mall was no longer the dominant mall in the area. However, Fredericton Mall continued to stay popular as a secondary mall in the area.
By the end of the 1980s, Metropolitan permanently closed as the chain was struggling at the time. Soon after, Fredericton Mall had some renovations done which freshened up the interior of the mall, with these renovations, a food court was made in the former Metropolitan space.
By the mid 1990s, Fredericton Mall began to decline and lose tenants. In 1997, the malls short lived food court was closed and converted to a Staples location.
By the early 2000s, Crombie REIT decided the Fredericton Mall no longer needed to operate in its current state as a lot of tenants were gone by this point. In 2006, the mall permanently closed. Part of the mall was demolished, while the rest was converted into a open-air shopping centre named Uptown Centre. Some of the original tenants of Uptown Centre included Urban Planet, Moore's, and Mark's.
On March 14th, 2013, Zellers permanently closed. On November 13th, 2013, a new Target Canada location opened. On April 4th, 2015, under two years after it opened, Target closed after leaving the Canadian market. After sitting vacant for a few years, in 2019, the Target location was demolished to build a new Sobeys. The former Sobeys location was turned into PetSmart (which moved from its Corbett Centre location) and Marshalls.
Today, even though it no longer operates as an enclosed mall, Uptown Centre continues to be a popular shopping destination in the Fredericton area.
