The Toronto Eaton Centre is an enclosed shopping centre and office tower complex in downtown Toronto, Ontario. Its one of the largest malls in Ontario. There are over 200 stores and services in the mall. The malls major anchor space, which was formerly Eaton's, Sears, and Nordstrom is currently vacant. However, Simons will take up part of the space in the future.

History[]

Before the Toronto Eaton Centre, Eaton's flagship location was using a part of the land, the rest of the land was used by other buildings. For more info on this location, see the Eaton's page.

In the 1960s, the Toronto Eaton Centre plan was made. However, there was negative feedback from the surrounding area as this page sought to demolish many buildings including the historic Old Toronto City Hall. Because of this, the plan was put on hold in 1967.

In 1971, the Toronto Eaton Centre plan was revised to not demolish any historical buildings. This new plan made the structure a bit smaller and changed to orientation so it could fit in with the buildings that weren't going to be demolished.

In the mid 1970s, construction started on the Eaton Centre. The structure was designed to be very modern and state of the art for its time, with large skylights and a bight atmosphere. In comparison, most malls that were built in the 1970s were usually dark and didn't have much natural lighting.

The first part of the mall opened in 1977, which was the new Eaton's location. In 1979, the rest of the mall. Over the next decade or so, the office towers on top of the mall were also competed. Opening with the mall was an 18 screen Cineplex Cinema, which was the largest cinema in the world at the time.

The mall was an success remained popular over the next two decades. In 1999, Eaton's filed for bankruptcy and closed most stores. Sears purchased the assets of the chain and kept a few Eaton's stores, including the one at the Toronto Eaton Centre.

In 2002, Sears closed all remaining Eaton's locations. The Toronto Eaton Centre location was converted to Sears Canada. During this time, the mall had some exterior renovations done to modernize the property.

In 2003, one of the Toronto Eaton Centre parking garages was demolished. In its place, a new wing of the mall was constructed which opened in 2006. Canadian Tire became a new anchor.

In June of 2010, a major interior renovation was done to the mall to keep the Toronto Eaton Centre competitive with other malls such as Yorkdale.

On October 29th, 2013, Sears closed their location at the Toronto Eaton Centre. Only a few months later in January, Nordstrom announced their new location in the former Sears space. The lower levels which weren't used by Nordstrom were converted to other retailers.

On June 13th, 2023, Nordstrom closed their Toronto Eaton Centre location after leaving the Canadian market. In June of 2024, Simons announced that they would be opening a new location in part of the space which will open in 2025.

Today, the Toronto Eaton Centre continues to be a very popular shopping destination in downtown Toronto.
