The Village Shopping Centre is a Canadian shopping mall located at St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada with around 49 tenants in total.
History[]
The Village Shopping Centre started construction in 1976 and then opened in 1978 as the main rival to Avalon Mall, the mall had 3 anchors when opening, those were Dominion, Woolco and Sears.
In 1981, the mall faced more competition with the opening of Mount Pearl Square, which was called "Sobeys Square" at the time.
Woolco was converted into Walmart in 1994 while Dominion was bought out by Loblaws in 1995 converting into the new Dominion Stores brand.
In 2002, Dominion closed and relocated to 260 Blackmarsh Rd, St. John's. Soon after, Sport Chek opened at the mall, Walmart was the next store to leave the mall after relocating towards Mount Pearl, the space was converted into Labels by 2006, also around the same year, Sears closed their store at the mall relocating to Avalon Mall. Soon after, a Hart store opened in part of the upper floor of the former Sears location.
In 2011, Hart filed for bankruptcy protection and announced that all 10 Newfoundland & Labrador locations would be closed and sold off to Rossy, which opened in the same year. Around this time, The Village started struggling because of competition from other malls in the city. Over the next few years, the mall began to lose interior tenants, which the mall continues to struggle with today.
In 2012, Sport Chek moved to the former Sears space while Bed Bath & Beyond opened a new store in the former Dominion location, being the only location in Newfoundland & Labrador at the time.
Home Hardware opened in the part of the former Sears space in 2015 while Labels closed their location at the mall in 2016, during the year 2018, it was rumored that Sport Chek would relocate to Avalon Mall but instead, Sport Chek did not relocate and opened the new store in the year 2020.
In April 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond closed their location at the mall due to bankruptcy, Rooms + Spaces planned to open at the space a few months later but they never actually ended up opening, by 2024, Pipers opened at a part of the former Labels space.
