Not to be confused with Atlantic Superstore or Real Canadian Superstore

The Real Superstore was a hypermarket chain in Louisiana, USA.

History

In 1979, Loblaws established the Real Canadian Superstore. It ended up being a success, so they decided to expand these stores elsewhere. Loblaw's already had a presence in America with National, which was a supermarket chain Loblaw's owned, so they thought that this chain would do just as well as the Canadian stores. They opened 2 locations within the state of Louisiana, they were both around 105 000 to 110 000 square feet.

The stores actually did well for the first few years. But in the 1990s, competition from stores like Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco, and Super Kmart Center made the Real Superstore decline. If we look at Super Kmart, their stores were bigger and offered more selection compared to the Real Superstore, they also usually had better locations too.

Around 1995, Loblaws decided that National and the Real Superstore no longer could be justified to remain open, so they closed both chains and left the American market to focus on the Canadian market.
