Staples Canada is a big-box office supply store in Canada. They operate over 100 locations across all 10 provinces and 2 territories, Northwest Territories and the Yukon territory. They have been separate from the American chain of stores since 2017.

History[]

In 1991, Jack Bingleman founded The Business Depot. This was a big box office supply store that had a similar concept to Staples stores in the United States. These stores quickly grew outside of Ontario and into other provinces.

In 1994, Staples decided to buy out the Business Depot chain. In the same year, Staples rebranded many stores to "Staples Business Depot". This excluded certain Ontario locations, where the name "The Business Depot" continued to be used. In Quebec, the "Bureau en Gros" name was used instead as Quebec is a primarily French speaking province.

When Office Depot began the process of expanding into the Canadian market in 1993, Staples banned the chain from using their name in Canada. This was done by making an injunction, which is when an entity can get in legal trouble for doing something deemed not allowed by a court.

In 2001 and 2002, Staples and Office Depot made an agreement, and Office Depot was allowed to use their name in Canada. However, Office Depot's Canadian expansion wasn't successful, and they had left the country by the 2010s.

In 2017, Staples was purchased by Sycamore partners. The new owners split Staples and Staples Canada into two different entities, which meant that the two chains were now separate.

In December of 2018. Staples Canada made a new logo and store concept to be used in their stores. This new branding separated themselves more from the American chain. The first store to use this concept was in Toronto at 375 University Ave. Throughout the next few years and into the 2020s, Staples Canada has continued to renovate more stores.
