South Shore Centre (Formerly Bridgewater Mall) is a regional enclosed shopping centre in the town of Bridgewater, NS. It's the largest enclosed mall in the area.

History[]

Before South Shore Centre, there was South Shore Mall, which served as the only shopping centre in Bridgewater. In 1974, construction started on South Shore Centre. The area where the mall was built used to be home to a train station and various other downtown buildings. The area was completely demolished, and the mall opened in 1975.

Its original anchors were Dominion, Towers, and Woolworth's. Inside the mall, there were many national retailers, and the mall was much bigger than its older counterpart. South Shore Centre quickly became the dominant mall in the Bridgewater area.

In 1985, Dominion left the Nova Scotian market, and most stores were rebranded to IGA.

In 1991, the Hudson's Bay Company purchased Towers from Oshawa Group. Most stores, including the one at South Shore Centre, were rebranded to Zellers.

In 1994, Woolworth's closed after the Canadian division was purchased by Walmart. It was replaced with People's Department Store.

In the 1990s, the mall underwent a renovation and expansion which completely redid the interior and exterior of the mall, they also added a food court. In 1996, following the closure of South Shore Mall, Empire Theatres moved to a standalone location in the parking lot of the mall.

In 1995, People's went bankrupt and closed all of their stores. This location was replaced with Nothin' Fancy Furniture Wearhouse.

In the early 2000s, the food court was walled off (Except for Tim Horton's) and was turned into a Sobeys.

In 2008, a part of the mall hallway was walled off and was converted into a Shoppers Drug Mart which opened in early 2009. The old location within the mall was turned into a Scotiabank. Around this time, Nothin' Fancy Furniture Warehouse closed.

On March 30, 2013, Zellers closed at South Shore Centre. Soon after, the store was replaced with Mark's, Winners, Dollarama (Which moved from its location within the mall) Leon's, and Sport Chek.

Around this time, the mall began to lose tenants and popularity, part of the reason may be due to a power centre that was built near by with stores like Canadian Tire and Walmart Supercentre.

In 2015, a Rossy moved into the former Nothin' Fancy Furniture Wearhouse.

In early 2019, the mall underwent a rebrand from Bridgewater Mall to South Shore Centre, with this name change came a minor renovation which added the new logo throughout the inside and outside of the mall.

In 2020, Leon's closed its store at South Shore Centre, it was later replaced with JYSK, which is the only current location in Nova Scotia.

South Shore Centre continues to be a somewhat successful mall in the Bridgewater area, although it has been declining over the past few years.
