Mall History[]

Schuylkill Mall

Schuylkill Mall, developed by Crown American, opened its doors to the public on October 9, 1980. The original anchor tenants included Kmart, Sears, and Hess's, while initial occupants featured McCrory's, Rea & Derick, Weis Markets, McDonald's, and Lerner Shops. Although JCPenney was initially planned as a fourth anchor, it never materialized. Instead, in 1983, Pomeroy's assumed the role of the fourth anchor.

In 1987, Pomeroy's underwent a transformation and became Bon-Ton. The year 1991 marked the addition of a fifth anchor, Phar-Mor. However, in 1995, Hess's closed its doors, making way for US Factory Outlets to take its place. That same year, Sears expanded, adding 23,000 square feet by incorporating former mall spaces.

In 1998, Rex TV & Appliance established a presence within the mall. By the year 2000, US Factory Outlets ceased operations, and Black Diamond Antiques took its place. The year 2002 witnessed the closure of Phar-Mor due to bankruptcy, with Black Diamond Antiques relocating to the vacated space.

In 2006, Black Diamond Antiques closed, paving the way for Steve & Barry's to open in October 2007. Unfortunately, this venture was short-lived, as Steve & Barry's closed its doors in 2009. The same year saw the closure of Chick-fil-A, with a fitness center subsequently occupying the former Joann Fabrics space.

By 2010, Famous Labels had shuttered its doors. In November 2011, Dunham's Sports signed a lease to open a store at the mall. In September 2012, the vacant Phar-Mor space underwent a transformation into Dunham's Sports, prompting Black Diamond Antiques to relocate back to the former Hess's/Famous Labels space. In October 2014, Sears closed its doors, followed by Kmart in October 2015. The last remaining anchor, Bon-Ton, closed its doors in May 2017.

On January 15, 2018, Schuylkill Mall ceased operations and was permanently closed. The last tenant to close in the Schuylkill Mall was Pearl Stadium 8 Theatres, which closed January 15, 2018. The complete demolition of the mall took place on September 5, 2018, leaving the land vacant to this day.

In 2020, a warehouse called ID Logistics XMD3 took over half of the parking lot space.

Other businesses in the Schuylkill Mall were Arby's, Payless ShoeSource, Big Lots (in the former Weis Markets area), The Coney Island, Auntie Anne's, Nirvana's Closet, Spencer, The Gap (not to be confused with G A P), FYE, Cingular Wireless, Waldenbooks, Space Point, Schuylkill Valley Sports, and Fashion Bug.

When the Schuylkill Mall closed, Dunham's Sports moved to the nearby Fairlane Village Mall in 2019.
