Sackville Town Centre (Now called First Lake Centre) was a community shopping mall in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. Due to competition from other shopping centres in the area, the mall was converted to a shopping plaza in the 1990s.
History[]
The mall had an opening date of Winter 1977. Its original anchor was Dominion. in the mall, there was a Shoppers Drug Mart. The mall mostly had local tenants because the nearby Downsview Mall already had many national retailers. Sackville Town Centre was never that popular, people would rather shop the many different national retailers on nearby Sackville Drive instead of going to this mall.
In 1985, Dominion left the Nova Scotian market, this location was replaced with Best 4 Less, which was a discount grocery store chain similar to No Frills. By 1988, Best 4 Less closed their location at Sackville Town Centre and the store was replaced with IGA.
By the late 1980s, the mall began to decline and lose tenants, in the 1990s, the owner of the mall had decided to redevelop the mall into a shopping and business centre called First Lake Centre. Most of the malls main concourse was demolished and turned into parking, this is why the centre is split into two different sections.
In 2011, part of First Lake Centre was demolished to build a Sobeys, which opened by late 2012.
In 2022, a proposal was made to build 20+ story towers on part of the property,[1] this led to backlash from the community because some people thought that the proposed buildings were too tall. The developer eventually caved in and revised the development to have 6 story buildings instead[2]
Today, First Lake Centre continues to operate with various offices and retail stores adorning the property, if the proposal ends up happening, then most of the centre will be demolished for the new development.
