SAAN was a discount department store chain that operated in Canada. At their peak, they had 223 locations in all 10 Provinces and 2 territories. But in the 2000s, they began to decline because of competition from stores like Zellers and Walmart Canada, and all stores were closed by 2008.

History[]

In 1947, Sam & Albert Cohen opened the first SAAN store in Winnipeg, MB. Originally, the store sold excess inventory from the Canadian Armed Forces. Eventually, SAAN grew from one store to over 100 locations, and they began to sell other items from a variety from suppliers.

SAAN eventually sold clothing, housewares, furniture, toys, and other products found in discount department stores. However, SAAN stores were smaller than most suburban big box stores like Walmart.

In 1997, SAAN acquired Metropolitan, which was a similar discount department store chain. This led to SAAN expanding into Atlantic Canada as most locations were rebranded to SAAN locations.

SAAN eventually made a new store concept called Red Apple Clearance stores, many SAAN locations were turned into this new store.

In 2004, SAAN entered bankruptcy protection, at this time, SAAN had over 80 million dollars in debt and was struggling to keep afloat, throughout the 2000s, many SAAN locations were closed. In 2008, SAAN permanently closed all of their remaining locations, The Bargain! Shop bought the remaining assets of the company, and many locations were turned into The Bargain! Shop locations.
