RioCan Green Lane is a power centre complex in Newmarket, Ontario. Its current anchors are Costco Wholesale and Real Canadian Superstore. Other major tenants include PetSmart, Michaels, and Dollar Tree.
History[]
The first tenant of RioCan Green Lane was Costco Wholesale, which opened in 2000. Soon after, a second section opened with various smaller tenants and restaurants such as Reitman's and Bulk Barn. Another section opened which included several big box stores, such as Linens N Things and PetSmart.
In early 2006, the centres second anchor opened, which was a Real Canadian Superstore. This is a larger concept store, with a Fit4Less, full pharmacy section, and full Joe Fresh section. A garden centre is opened seasonally in the parking lot.
In December 2007, the Green Lane Commons opened close to RioCan Green Lane, this is a similar power centre which is currently anchored by Rona+. The two power centres remain in conjunction with each other today.
In 2008, Linens N Things closed after the chain filed for bankruptcy and closed all of their locations. Soon after, the similar chain Bed Bath & Beyond moved into the space.
In late 2011, a part of Costco's parking lot was redeveloped into a Costco gas bar, this was one of the first locations in Canada.
In early 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond closed as part of the chain exiting the Canadian market. Rooms + Spaces bought the lease with plans to open their store in the space, even getting as far as putting the exterior signs up. However, after most Rooms + Spaces locations were cancelled, Value Village bought the lease instead and plans to move into the space by 2025, replacing a smaller location a couple kilometers away.
Today, RioCan Green Lane remains a popular power centre in the Newmarket area.
