RioCan Elmvale (also known as Elmvale Acres Centre) is a smaller sized enclosed shopping mall in Ottawa, Ontario. The northern section of the mall is open-air, while the southern section is enclosed. Its current anchors include Independent, Dollarama, and Rexall. The mall is one of the oldest enclosed malls in Canada, with a opening date of 1961, predating malls such Halifax Shopping Centre and Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

History[]

Elmvale Centre opened in 1961 as part of the Elmvale Acres housing project, with the original anchors of F.W. Woolworth and Steinberg's. The mall also included a Ottawa Public Library branch and many other shops and services.

In 1967, the St. Laurent Centre opened nearby the Elmvale Acres Centre. This added much more competition for the mall, however, Elmvale Acres Centre remained as a local mall.

In 1969, Steinberg's was converted to Miracle Food Mart as part of the rebranding of all Ontario locations.

By 1990, F.W. Woolworth closed as the company began to phase out the Woolworth name in Canada in favor of Woolco. The space was divided into several smaller tenants.

In 1998, all Miracle Food Mart locations were closed. Loblaws later moved into the space.

By the 2000s, the Ottawa Library Branch had moved to the outdoor part of the mall. Dollarama later moved into the former space.

In 2020, part of the mall was demolished. A new condo was built in its place.

In 2022, Loblaws was converted to Your Independent Grocer, which still operates today.

Today, RioCan Elmvale continues to operate as a popular shopping centre in the surrounding area.
