History[]
RioCan Centre Sudbury started construction in 1998, in an area that was primarily a forest at the time. The power centre was complete in November 1999. The original anchors of the property were Costco, Famous Players SilverCity, The Home Depot, Winners, and PetSmart.
By 2002, two new sections opened. The first section included Linens N' Things, Reitman's, Michael's, and Old Navy. The second section included Tip Top Tailors, Stitches, Jay Set, Pennington's, and other smaller retailers. Around this time, Sears Home and HomeSense also opened for business.
At the end of 2008, Linens N' Things filed for bankruptcy and closed all locations. After sitting vacant for a couple years, a Golf Town moved in. Structube currently occupies the space.
In December 2009, a brand new Lowe's store opened at a new section of the property. This was the first Northern Ontario location. Starting in early 2010, the rest of the new section started construction and was complete by 2011. This new area included Toys "R" Us, Marshalls, Best Buy, and LCBO.
In 2012, a new access road was built so the Lowe's section could be better accessed.
In 2017, Sears Home permanently closed after its Sears Canada filed for bankruptcy. In 2018, the space was divided into Winners and HomeSense. The former HomeSense was turned into Bed Bath & Beyond, and the old Winners was turned into Dollar Tree and Staples which opened in 2022. The old Staples was demolished and a Costco gas bar was built in its place.
In 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond closed after the chain filed for bankruptcy and closed all locations. Pro Hockey Life opened in 2024. Also in 2023, Lowe's was converted to Rona+ after they left the Canadian market. In late 2024, Chapter's was converted to Indigo.
In November 2024, it was announced that Toys "R" Us would be closing, among several other underperforming locations across Canada. The store will close at the end of December 2024, just after Christmas.[1]
Today, RioCan Centre Sudbury continues to be a popular power centre in the Sudbury area.
