Rexdale Mall or Rexdale Plaza was an enclosed Shopping Mall located in Etobicoke, Ontario. It closed and was demolished in 2003/2004.

History[]

The mall originally open as an outdoor mall in 1956 with Dominion as an anchor.

In 1972, a golf course next to the mall was flattened to make way for a mall expansion. A Towers was constructed, adding a second anchor to the mall. Since the Towers was across a road, a skyway was built to connect the store to the mall, during the expansion, a roof was added to make Rexdale mall an enclosed mall. A Eaton's Department Store was built on the other side of the mall, where Dominion was.

In the 1970s and 80s, the mall served as local community mall, with many local restaurants and businesses, as well as some national retailers like Shoppers Drug Mart. During this time, an underground parking lot was constructed underneath the mall concourse.

In 1991, Zellers replaced Towers as an anchor for the mall.

In the early 1990s, Bargain Harold's closed, which was one of the anchors for the mall.

In the 1990s, the mall was quite dated and old looking, many national retailers in the mall vacated, leaving many vacancies in the mall and making the mall less popular. It also didn't help that the much larger and newer looking Woodbine Mall was only a few blocks away.

At the turn of the century, the Zellers and Eaton's closed at the mall. Because of this, some of the last national retailers such as Shoppers Drug Mart had left the mall.

In 2003, all of the mall except for the former Towers / Zellers was demolished, in the malls place, a Walmart Supercenter was built. The former Zellers building turned into multiple retailers, such as an Asian grocery store and a fitness centre.
