Reitmans is a Canadian women's clothing retailer. They operate in all 10 provinces and 2 territories. They are the biggest women's clothing store in Canada. They also own several other retail stores, some of which are no longer in operation.

History

In 1926, Herman and Sarah Reitman opened the first Reitmans location in Montreal. This first store sold general assortments of clothing. Following the success of the first location, they added a second location which catered towards women's clothing.

The company quickly grew throughout the downtowns of many Canadian cities, eventually becoming the nations largest women's clothing retailer.

In the 1960s, Canada started opening its first indoor shopping malls. Reitmans took the opportunity to open new, larger stores within these malls. The plan was a success, and Reitmans became a major mall retailer across the country.

In the coming years, Reitmans expanded their operations in Canada, along with their other subsidiaries. Their main one being Penningtons, which is a plus-sized clothing retailer.

In the 2000s, with the decline of indoor shopping malls, Reitmans began to open stores in Canadian Power Centers, which are large outdoor shopping centers. Reitmans continues to open more of these locations. However, Reitmans has closed many under performing stores within the past couple decades in dead or dying malls due to low sales.

In 2020, Reitmans filed for bankruptcy protection. They closed all of their Thyme Maternity and Addition Elle locations and restructured the company. In 2022, Reitmans emerged from bankruptcy protection.

Reitmans continues to be of the largest clothing retailers in Canada, and they have been doing well ever since they've left bankruptcy.
