Real Canadian Superstore is a Hypermarket chain in Canada founded and operated by Loblaw's.
History[]
In 1979, Loblaws made a hypermarket chain in western Canada called Supervalu. Supervalu already existed at this point, but this was a very different concept to a standard Supervalu location. The first location opened in a former Loblaws store in Saskatoon, SK. These stores were opened throughout Western Canada, becoming the predominant Loblaws subsidiary over actual Loblaws stores, Today, no Loblaws operate in Western Canada, which shows how successful Real Canadian Superstore was and is.
In the early 1980s, Loblaws opened "The Real Superstore" locations in Louisiana, USA. These stores were very similar, if not the same as Supervalu, so Loblaws decided to re-name most Supervalu locations to "The Real Canadian Superstore" by the early 1990s, the transformation was basically complete, and Loblaws turned Supervalu into a completely different concept that was operated in western Canada, and was later expanded in Atlantic Canada with "Atlantic Supervalu." All of the Atlantic stores have since been turned into No Frills or Atlantic Superstore.
In the 2000s, Loblaws decided to expand the Real Canadian Superstore into Ontario. This caused a lot of confusion because Loblaws already operated "Loblaws Superstore" locations, among other brands, even today, Loblaws and its subsidiaries are very confusing and convoluted.
In July 2024, the Atlantic Superstore logo was changed from the Loblaws symbol to the Real Canadian Superstore symbol. This caused confusion on if Loblaws was rebranding Atlantic Superstore to Real Canadian Superstore. At least for now, these rumors are false and Atlantic Superstore remains with the same name.
