History[]
The Quinte Mall opened on August 18th, 1971 as the second mall in Belleville, the first being Bayview Mall which opened 10 years earlier[1]. Its original anchors were Miracle Food Mart, Simpsons-Sears, and Kmart. The mall was very popular at the time, and quickly became the most popular mall in the area. The mall also included a twin Famous Players cinema. The malls original was Ivanhoe Cambridge, who sold the mall to Cushman & Wakefield in the 2000s.
By the end of the decade, Simpsons-Sears was converted to just Sears after the two companies parted ways.
Over the next twenty years, the mall stayed mostly the same. It wasn't until 1998 when some anchor changes were made. In May 1998, Kmart Canada permanently closed after the company left the Canadian market. In the same year, Miracle Food Mart also closed.
In late 1998, the mall had its first major renovation, which redid both the interior and exterior of the mall. Toys "R" Us and a few other tenants moved into the Miracle Food Mart space. Chapters, Sport Chek, GoodLife Fitness and Winners moved into the former Kmart space. With the renovations and new big box tenants, the mall once again became popular. In the same year, Famous Players built a new 8-screen theatre in the parking lot of the mall, the former cinemas were turned into other store spaces. Other big box tenants were also built in the parking lot such as Sears Home and Staples.
On November 9th, 2009, the Famous Players theatre was rebranded to Galaxy Cinemas as part of the phase out of the Famous Players name.
On January 7th, 2018, Sears permanently closed after the company filed for bankruptcy and closed all Canadian locations. For the time being, the space remained vacant. In the same year, 20 Tesla charging stations were added to the parking lot of the mall as part of the modernization of the property.
In late 2022, most of the former Sears space was demolished, the undemolished part was turned into a new Winners store, the old location became vacant when the new store opened in 2023. Also in 2022, Primaris REIT bought the mall from Cushman & Wakefield.
Today, the Quinte Mall remains a very popular mall in the Belleville Area.
