Port Hawkesbury Centre is an enclosed community shopping mall in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. The mall is on the smaller side, with one hallway and 2 major anchors on ether side, Walmart and Giant Tiger, along with 6 minor anchors, Dollarama, EasyHome, Mark's, Pet Valu, YMCA | Nova Scotia Works, and one vacant space for lease. The mall has a mix of mostly local tenants and a few national tenants.
History[]
Port Hawkesbury Centre opened in 1970 with F.W. Woolworth and Dominion as its anchors. The mall originally had many different national and local retailers.
In 1985, Dominion left the Nova Scotian market. The location at Port Hawkesbury Shopping Centre closed, a few years later, a Hart moved into the space.
In 1990, most Canadian F.W. Woolworth locations, including the one at Port Hawkesbury Shopping Centre were converted to Woolco. In March 1994, the Woolco at the mall was converted to Walmart, which remains as the main anchor of the mall today.
Over the next decade, not much happened. The mall has never received any renovations and still has its original design today.
In the late 2000s and 2010s, Port Hawkesbury Centre began to decline. Stores like Movie Gallery and Pennington's permanently closed.
In 2011, Hart filed for bankruptcy, because of this, Hart completely left the Nova Scotia and Newfoundland markets. The store at Port Hawkesbury Shopping Centre was replaced with Labels soon after. Hart has since re entered the Port Hawkesbury market on the other side of town.
In 2014, Labels closed, soon after, Giant Tiger moved in to the space.
In the later half of the 2010s, even more stores closed. Including: People's Jewellers, Sears Hometown, Bentley, Alia N Tanjay, Stitches and more.
In 2020, the mall Walmart entrance was closed off due to COVID-19. The entrance was never reopened and remains closed, resulting in a reduced foot traffic in the mall.
In January 2025, Reitmans closed their doors for good, leaving the space vacant.
Today, the mall continues to operate and does well.
