Parkway Mall is a shopping and business complex in Saint John, New Brunswick. The property is located on the north side of the city, in a suburban and commercial area. The properties current anchors include Hart, Value Village, and Dollarama. Originally, the property was solely used as a enclosed mall. However, after years of decline, most of the interior of the mall was divided up into office space in the 2010s.
History[]
The Parkway Mall opened in 1973. At the time, it was one of the largest malls in the city, with many different national tenants. Parkway Mall's original tenants were Zellers, Metropolitan, and SaveEasy. There was also a Empire Theatres.
Two years after the mall opened, McAllister Place was built across the street. This mall was much bigger and had more stores. At the time, Parkway Mall continued to stay competitive.
On February 26th, 1995, the parkway Empire Theatres permanently closed and moved to a larger 10-screen theatre across the street. Around 1996, SaveEasy was converted to Atlantic Supervalu. In 1997, Metropolitan filed for bankruptcy and closed all locations. A year later, the Metropolitan space was split into BiWay, Value Village, and NB Liquor. After these anchor changes, the mall began to decline and lose tenants, especially because McAllister Place had expansions done around this time.
In 1998, Zellers permanently closed and relocated to the former Kmart at McAllister Place. The space was split into Office Interiors, Wacky's Flooring, and an ICT call centre. As none of these tenants had mall entrances, Parkway Mall declined further and lost most of its national tenants.
In 2000, Shoppers Drug Mart, which was one of the last national tenants permanently closed. A Salvation Army later moved into the space, but closed a few years later. In 2001, BiWay permanently closed and was replaced with The Bargain! Shop. Around this time, Atlantic Supervalu closed and was converted to NuBody Fitness and Dollarama.
By 2005, the interior of the mall was down to under 5 tenants. And the writing was on the wall for the future of Parkway Mall. By 2009, The Bargain! Shop closed. By 2010, the owners of Parkway Mall decided to redevelop the mall into a business centre, with retail of the exterior. The last remaining interior tenants were closed, and the plan was set in place. By 2013, all Parkway Mall signage was taken down and the property was no longer a mall.
On January 24th, 2016, NB Liquor permanently closed. The space is currently occupied by Dooly's and Supplement King.
On December 8th, 2021, a new Hart store opened in part of the former Zellers space. This is the first Hart location in Saint John.
Today, even through Parkway Mall isn't a mall anymore, it still serves as a place of employment and has various retail and food offerings to serve Saint John.
