Park Lane is an enclosed shopping mall and office tower in Downtown Halifax, NS. It located on Spring Garden Road, which is one of the busiest roads in Atlantic Canada. Its current major tenants are Dollarama and Cineplex Cinemas.
History[]
In 1986, a proposal was made to completely redevelop a block of downtown Halifax with a shopping mall, office tower, and a parking garage. The plan was accepted and the mall opened on October 28, 1988. It originally opened with a Famous Players Theatres, which replaced the former Scotia Square cinemas, there was a large food court built on the basement level.
The mall was designed as an upscale shopping mall with marble flooring, skylights, and a large water fountain. Many higher end retailers were opened, and the office tower on the upper levels of the tower were quickly filled with offices.
In June 2004, the Famous Players Theatres was sold to Empire Theatres and was subsequently rebranded.
In late 2012, most of the food court was closed off, the space was converted to Goodlife Fitness, which opened in 2013. However, A&W and another restaurant weren't redeveloped and continued to operate.
In 2013, Empire Theatres was purchased by Cineplex Cinemas and the cinemas were once again rebranded. In the same year, the water fountain on the basement level was dismantled.
In 2016, the mall had a minor renovation, new seating was added in the malls concourse, and the main mall entrance was redone, the logo was updated to look similar to the new Scotia Square logo at the time.
In 2018, Crombie REIT, who were the original owners of the mall, sold the mall to Universal Properties, who continue to operate the mall today.
Today, Park Lane Mall continues to operate as a popular mall in Halifax, in recent years, the mall has became less exclusive, as stores like Dollarama now populate the mall. The Cineplex Cinemas is now ones of the last movie theatres in Halifax, the only other Halifax theatre is in Bayers Lake Power Centre.
