Northwest Centre (Formerly Moncton Mall) is an open-air shopping centre in Moncton, NB. It was formerly an enclosed shopping mall until it was de-malled in the early 2000s. Canadian Tire, Marshalls, Sobeys, and Sport Chek are the current anchors of the property.

History[]

Moncton mall had an opening year of 1973. This was the second enclosed mall in Moncton, the first being Highfield Square. Moncton Mall's original anchors were Metropolitan and Zellers.

Only a year after the opening of Moncton Mall, Champlain Place opened around 6 kilometers away. This impacted the mall as Champlain Place was much bigger.

Over the next two decades, not much changed at the mall. However, more suburban development was popping up in the area at the time.

In November of 1996, a brand new power centre opened which featured Kmart, Costco, Sears Home, Famous Players, and many other popular retailers. This caused even more of a decline in the Moncton Mall. A few months later in early 1997, Metropolitan went bankrupt and closed all of their stores. With one of the malls anchors gone, some of the last retailers within the mall closed.

By the turn of the century, the malls owners decided that there wasn't any reason to continue operating the Moncton Mall in its current state, and the mall was closed and partially demolished.

In its place came the Northwest Centre, a strip mall. Its original anchors were Sobeys and Zellers which remained from the Moncton Mall.

On March 14, 2013, Zellers permanently closed their Northwest Centre location. On November 13th, 2013, a Target Canada opened in its place. After under two years, Target closed on April 12th, 2015.

On March 10th, 2016. A Canadian Tire opened in the former Target space, relocating from its former space around a kilometer away. This new Canadian Tire was the largest location in New Brunswick on its opening date.

Today, Northwest Centre continues to be a popular strip mall in the Moncton area.
