Northern Reflections is a Canadian women's apparel chain. They operate over 100 locations across all 10 provinces in Canada. Stores are primarily found in enclosed shopping malls and other shopping centres.
The chains primary customer base is middle aged women.[1] As there isn't too many Canadian retailers that focus on this age range, Northern Reflections is able to succeed in the market.
History[]
In the 1980s, F.W. Woolworth decided to make a women's clothing retailer in Canada.
In 1985, Northern Reflections was founded. Their first location opened the same year in Guelph, Ontario.[2] Over the next few years, Northern Reflections opened many more stores in other shopping malls across Canada.
Eventually, Northern Reflections made other chains that targeted other age ranges and types of clothing. These include Northern Traditions and Northern Getaway.[3] They would usually attached or directly next to a Northern Reflections location.
By the next decade, Northern Reflections had expanded into other provinces; the United States market and was operating over 500 locations across all provinces and many states.
In 1997, F.W. Woolworth went bankrupt and the remaining assets were turned into Venator Group who continued to run Northern Reflections and their sister chains. The next year, Northern Reflections had reached their peak, they had 956 locations across the United States and Canada.[4]
In 2001, Venator Group was turned into Foot Locker. However, they decided to sell off Northern Reflections. York Management Group bought all 364 Canadian locations. However, no one bought the American division, and all United States locations were liquidated and closed by the end of 2001. Northern Reflections continued to run an American e-commerce site until it was shut down around a decade later.
In 2007, Northern Getaway and Northern Elements were discontinued and consolidated into Northern Reflections.
In the 2010s, Northern Reflections started to decline because of competition from other retailers and online sites. This resulted in some stores closing.
In 2021, Northern Reflections filed for restructuring. This let the company change some things to make Northern Reflections more profitable and continue to operate into the future. [5]
Today, even through they aren't as big as they were in the 1990s, Northern Reflections continues to be a successful women's apparel retailer in Canada.
