North Sydney Mall is a Canadian shopping mall located in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, in the heart of North Sydney. The mall is owned and managed by Leyad. The mall covers 183,170 ft.² and is 40% of North Sydney’s total retail square footage.
History[]
The mall opened in 1980 with a variety of different tenants. Originally anchored by Zellers, Sobeys, Sears, Peoples (Department Store), Shoppers Drug Mart and NSLC. The mall never received any major renovations until 2024.
In the late 1990s - early 2000s, NSLC relocated across the street, adjacent to the Real Atlantic Superstore (formerly Atlantic SuperValu).
In 2007, Shoppers Drug Mart and Bell Aliant (The Rolling Phones) relocated to a standalone building across the street, along with a Quiznos Sub (Later Greco Pizza/Captain Submarine; now Pet Valu). The Bargain! Shop later opened in the former Shoppers Drug Mart space.
In the early 2010s, the mall was purchased by Econo Malls.
On June 6, 2012, Zellers closed and became Walmart in October 2012.
Throughout the mid 2010s and early 2020s, the mall saw decline with loss of various tenants and foot traffic.
On January 31, 2018, The Bargain! Shop closed due to its lease expiring and not being renewed. In July 2018, Dollarama relocated into the space, plus 2 adjacent spaces.
In 2020, the Northside Collaborative Clinic opened in the mall.
In 2022, construction of the Nova Scotia Health Authority Clinic began. The Primary Care Centre section opened in late 2023, and the Mental Health & Addictions Centre section opened in March 2024.
On February 1, 2024, Leyad purchased North Sydney Mall from Econo Malls. The mall is now undergoing a major renovation which includes enhancing common areas, reconfiguring current tenants, welcoming new tenants and improving security. Two unnamed major national tenants have signed leases at the mall.
