Mount Pearl Square (formerly Sobeys Square) was a shopping mall located at the former of Mount Pearl and St. John's in Newfoundland & Labrador, it closed in 2021 after Cineplex closed their movie theater inside the mall.

History[]

The mall opened in 1981 with a Sobeys and Topsail Theaters opening inside the mall, Zellers later opened in 1987. The mall had stores such as Suzy Shier, A Buck or Two, Eclipse, Ricki's, and many other tenants. During the 1990's the Sobeys store expanded while the Topsail Theaters was expanded to 6 screens, it started to fall in 1999 after Avalon Mall constructed a 12-screen Cineplex movie theater. During the early 2000's Sobeys closed and was replaced with Price Chopper, the mall's name was then changed to Mount Pearl Square after Sobeys left, during this time, Topsail Theaters was rebranded after being bought by Cineplex. In 2005, Teletech Canada took over a portion of the mall space, just a year later, Zellers closed their store inside the mall and relocated to Topsail Road where Kmart used to be. During the year 2013, the only tenants left inside the mall were the Cineplex movie theater, H&R Block, Bell Aliant, Robin's Donuts and a few other stores, Cineplex closed in 2021 along with the rest of the shopping mall. As of today, the former mall is mostly occupied by offices, Bell Aliant and many local businesses.
