Miracle Food Mart was a grocery store chain that operated throughout the Canadian province of Ontario. The chain was eventually discontinued in 1998, and stores were converted to either A&P or Food Basics.
History[]
In 1959, Steinberg entered the Ontarian market by purchasing all 38 Canadian Grand Union locations. These stores were rebranded to the Steinberg banner. 10 years later, their Ontario locations were rebranded to Miracle Food Mart. This was done to match the Miracle Mart branding, which was a department store chain owned by Steinberg.
Throughout the 1970s, Miracle Food Mart became successful as a discount grocery store chain with over 80 locations. Over the next few years, the chain continued to open more locations, some of them being in enclosed malls.
In 1987, the Miracle Ultra Mart banner was made which included more selection, a pharmacy department, and were open 24-hours. These stores also proved to be successful.
In 1989, Miracle Food Mart and Miracle Ultra Mart were purchased by A&P who continued to operate the chain. Soon after the chain was purchased, all Miracle Ultra Mart locations were rebranded to Ultra Food & Drug.
Throughout the 1990s, A&P started to phase out the Miracle Food Mart brand in favor of the A&P, Food Basics, and Dominion brands. In 1998, A&P announced that all remaining Miracle Food Mart locations would either be closed or converted to another one of A&P's banners. However, Ultra Food & Drug remained until Metro phased out that chain in 2008 and 2009.
