Microtel is an American chain of hotels operated by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. They currently have over 350 locations across multiple countries in Asia, Oceania, and North America.

History[]

Microtel was founded by Loren Ansley in 1989 and opened its first location in Henrietta, New York (a suburb of Rochester) as an economy hotel chain. Unlike most economy hotel chains, Microtel builds new properties from scratch as opposed to converting properties from other chains; Microtel properties are typically 2-4 floors high with interior-corridor rooms, with many offering both standard rooms and suites. In addition, Microtel properties typically have pools (and sometimes hot tubs), fitness centers, and in some cases, business centers on-site.

Microtel rooms have unique features not found in other hotel chains, including a window seat, a wall-length mirror above the beds, and wall-mounted lights (in lieu of lamps). Microtel was also the first economy hotel chain to offer standard local and long-distance calling and high-speed internet in its properties; by January 2005, all Microtel properties had these features.

In 1995, Microtel was acquired by US Franchise Systems. In late 2007, Microtel introduced its "Get Up and Joe" continental breakfast. In 2008, Wyndham purchased US Franchise Systems, which owned Microtel and Hawthorn Suites, from Hyatt, incorporating Microtel and Hawthorn Suites into the Wyndham portfolio; in 2012, Microtel received an updated logo, similar to that of fellow Wyndham hotels Hawthorn Suites and Wingate Hotels. In 2020, Microtel unveiled its new "Moda" prototype design; the Moda design is more efficient than the previous building design, with lower operating costs and uses easy-to-build construction. Currently, Microtel operates 350+ hotels worldwide, mainly in North America (US, Canada, and Mexico) but also in Argentina, China, the Philippines, and New Zealand.
