Mic Mac Mall is Atlantic Canada's second-largest shopping mall, located in the city of Dartmouth, across the harbour from Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is owned by Ivanhoé Cambridge, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec.

Built following the construction of Highway 111, the mall is located in a suburban area south of Lake Micmac and northwest of the Micmac Parclo interchange. It hosts a Halifax Transit bus terminal.

History[]

In 1971, the new Micmac village housing development in Dartmouth was being built. In the 1960s and 70s, Dartmouth was having a major rise in suburban development and population, but at the time, there was no major enclosed shopping centre. So along with the housing development, Mic Mac Mall was built.

The mall was originally owned by Simpson's and Eaton's department stores, which both were the original anchors of the mall. There was also a Dominion grocery store, and a Shoppers Drug Mart.

In 1978, the mall expanded to add another floor onto the mall.

In 1981, the Simpson's was expanded from 1 to 2 floors

In the early 1980s, the mall was bought out by Markborough Properties, which was owned by the Hudson's Bay company.

In 1986, Simpson's rebranded to Hudson's Bay, this was because Simpson's was bought out by HBC, all locations except in Ontario rebranded.

In 1985, IGA took over Dominion's Nova Scotia operations, and thus the Mic Mac Mall location was rebranded to IGA.

In 1994, the mall received its first major renovation. The mall tile was completely redone. Large palm trees were added to the Eaton's, centre, and Hudson's Bay courts, a clock tower was added to the centre court, a water fountain was also added, the food court was completely redone, and an arcade named "Sparkles" was added. The mall was also expanded once again to house Nova Scotia's first Toys "R" Us and a NSLC.

In 1997, a big blow happened to the mall when Eaton's closed its store at the mall. This was because Eaton's was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time and was closing a lot of their stores.

In 1999, Zellers opened in the mall, to make this happen, the mall expanded once again to make the former Eaton's space go from 1 to 2 floors. This was where the Zellers opened its store in the mall.

In 2002, the IGA closed its store at the mall, soon after, a Winners and Homesense moved in.

In 2005, the mall was expanded, this expansion added an Old Navy store to the mall.

In the late 2000s, the fountain and palm trees were removed from the mall, by this point, the arcade closed in the mall.

On December 17, 2012, the Zellers closed at Mic Mac Mall. Replaced by Target on September 17, 2013.

Also in December 2012, the Toys "R" Us closed its store at the mall and moved to Dartmouth Crossing. This space was replaced with a Forever 21.

In 2015, Target Canada closed all of its locations. the Target at Mic Mac Mall sat vacant for several years, seasonally used by Spirit Halloween.

Throughout late 2017 to 2019, the mall underwent another major renovation. The mall tile was once again redone with modern white tile, the courts were redone and the food court was redone. the biggest part of the renovation was in the former Target space. A new hallway was added to make a new mall entrance, and Winners, Linen Chest, and H&M moved into the new store spaces. Because of the Winners moving, the former location closed, and the Homesense moved to Dartmouth Crossing. The former H&M space was replaced with an Urban Planet. During this time, the Forever 21 closed its location at the mall. It was replaced with a Decathlon.

In 2023, an Orangetheory Fitness and Milestones Bar + Grill opened in the former NSLC space in the mall.

Also in 2023, Halifax council announced a new plan for Mic Mac Mall called the M District. This plan wants to move the parking for the mall underground and then build large condo towers in the space of the parking lot of the mall. This caused a protest at the mall, protesters believed that the plan should be changed to have affordable housing instead of expensive condos, the project is currently still in the planning phase.

In 2024, construction started in the former IGA/Winners space. Its a Mental Health and Addictions centre run by the IWK, a hospital in Halifax. This will open probably in late 2024 or early 2025.
