McAllister Place is a regional enclosed shopping mall in Saint John, New Brunswick. It is the largest and most popular mall in the city.
History[]
Before McAllister Place, there was already malls in Saint John. Including Loch Lomond Place and Parkway Mall. Directly across the street from Parkway Mall, McAllister Place was built. The mall was originally owned by The Rocca Group, which built many other malls in Atlantic Canada such as South Centre Mall and The Hub Shopping Centre.
The mall had an opening date of July 30, 1975, Its original anchors were Kmart and Sears. A year after, the mall had an expansion which added some more stores. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, McAllister Place became the dominant shopping mall in the Saint John area. For now, Parkway Mall and McAllister Place co-existed.
In the 1990s, the mall had more expansions done. This included a Sobeys, Toys "R" Us, and A Buck Or Two. During this time, the mall was also renovated.
In 1998, Kmart ended its Canadian operations. Zellers bought this location, and subsequently was rebranded. This ended up with the Parkway Mall Zellers closing.
In 2009, the mall had renovations done, this renovation redid the floors & ceilings, and added more seating to the food court. The renovation cost $13 Million dollars and took six months. Renovations were complete by the end of the year. [1] This renovations bought in many national retailers to the mall.
In 2012, Cadillac Fairview sold the mall to Primaris REIT for $317 Million Dollars. This is the same REIT company that owns Halifax Shopping Centre, which is one of the largest malls in Atlantic Canada. Also during this time, A Buck or Two closed its location at the mall.
In 2013, Target bought Zellers, the McAllister Place location was one of the Zellers that turned into Target. Also during this year, the mall had a small expansion which added a Lawtons Drugs.
In 2015, Both Target and Sobeys closed their locations at McAllister Place. These closures made large empty spaces in the mall.
Soon after Target closed, the space was replaced with GoodLife Fitness and Party City.
In 2017, Sears Canada went bankrupt and closed all of their locations. This location stayed vacant until 2019.
In September 2018, HomeSense and Marshalls opened locations in the former Sobeys space.
In 2019, an expansion commenced at the mall. A new mall space was made within the former Sears, and Mark's and The Brick opened.
McAllister Place continues to be one of the primary shopping destinations in Saint John, and the mall features many prominent national tenants.
