Heritage Place is an enclosed shopping mall in Owen Sound, Ontario. Its current anchors are Leon's, Giant Tiger and Food Basics.
History[]
Heritage Place opened in 1987 with two anchors, Sears and Zellers. Originally, the mall was very popular with many national tenants throughout the mall. In 1989, the mall had a expansion which added a Zehrs grocery store as an anchor along with around 20 more tenants.
After around 10 years of operation, Zehrs closed their Heritage Mall location and relocated down the road from the mall. By the turn of the century, Food Basics opened in the space.
On March 14th, 2013, Zellers permanently closed their Heritage Place location as part of the liquidation of the chain. Both Target and Walmart decided to not buy this lease, so the space sat vacant. This vacant anchor store caused the rest of the mall to decline, including the food court right next to the former Zellers.
In December 2017, Sears permanently closed their Heritage Place location. As both anchors were gone, the mall declined even further.
In 2018, the former Zellers space was split up into Giant Tiger, GoodLife Fitness, and Urban Planet. However, since none of these stores had interior mall entrances, the mall continued to decline.
In 2019, Leon's furniture warehouse moved into the former Sears. This new store did include an interior entrance, but it still didn't help the mall too much.
In 2022, the last food court tenant which was Subway closed its doors. Today, the food court of the mall continues to have no stalls open.
In 2024, the Urban Planet location was rebranded to Thrifty's, which is owned by the same company.
Today, Heritage Place continues to operate as the only enclosed mall in Owen Sound. Throughout the last 10 years, the mall has continually lost more and more tenants. The Food Basics wing of the mall continues to have a good amount of stores. But the Leon's - Food court hallways are quite dead, with few tenants.
