Hampton by Hilton (formerly, but still commonly called, Hampton Inns) is an American chain of hotels owned by Hilton Worldwide. The first Hampton Inn opened in Memphis, Tennessee in 1984 as a budget hotel chain by the Holiday Corporation (then the parent company of Holiday Inn). In 1989, Hampton Inn, along with Embassy Suites and Homewood Suites, was spun off into the Promus Hotel Corporation; under Promus, Hampton Inns became more midscale, offering amentities such as continental breakfast, swimming pools (at most locations), and exercise rooms; in 1995, Promus introduced Hampton Inn & Suites, which featured two-room suites in addition to standard room options. In 1999, Hilton Worldwide purchased Promus, making Hampton Inn (as well as Embassy Suites and Homewood Suites) part of Hilton Worldwide. Over the years, Hampton Inn replaced older properties (usually exterior-corridor properties and/or low-rise properties) with newer, interior-corridor properties with additional features. In 2007, locations outside the United States were known as Hampton by Hilton (or Hampton Inn by Hilton in Canada), before the "Hampton by Hilton" name was adopted in the United States in 2015. As of 2024, Hampton by Hilton operates over 3,000 hotels in over 40 countries; some locations are dual-branded with other Hilton brands.
