Gerrard Square is an enclosed shopping mall in Toronto, ON. It's located in a very central area of Toronto, just outside of the downtown of the city. Its current anchors are The Home Depot, Walmart, Food Basics, Staples, and Winners. The mall has two levels of retail.

History[]

Gerrard Square Shopping Centre opened on September 24th, 1975.[1] Its original anchors were Zellers, Sears, and Miracle Food Mart. The mall included many national retailers and was very popular at the time.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the neighbourhood around the mall began to decline. Because of this, many higher-end retailers closed their doors at Gerrard Square. The mall eventually became a lower end mall, and got the nickname of "Scary Square".[2]

In 1998, the Miracle Food Mart brand was discontinued. The location at Gerrard Square was converted to a Food Basics location, which remains at the mall today.

On June 3rd, 2004, Sears permanently closed their Gerrard Square location.[3] This caused even more stores to vacate the mall. Fortunately, The Home Depot moved into the space in November 2004. However, the upper level of Sears remained vacant for the time being. In 2005, the mall competed a $15 million dollar renovation to modernize the property and repair the old structure.

In the 2000s and 2010s, the area around the mall began to have a resurgence as more people were moving to the neighbourhood. This helped the mall become more popular again.

On April 5th, 2006, a new wing of the mall opened in the former upper level of Sears. This new wing included Winners and Planet Fitness.[2]

On October 26th, 2012, Zellers permanently closed their Gerrard Square location.[4] The lease was bought by Walmart Canada, which opened soon after.

Today, Gerrard Square continues to be a popular shopping centre in the Toronto area.
