History[]

Gander Mall opened by spring 1979 to compete against Fraser Mall which had already opened years ago during that time, the mall opened with 2 anchor stores and 1 shadow-anchor, F.W. Woolworth, Shoppers Drug Mart and Dominion opened as the mall's first anchors, the mall didn't change much for over 10 years, in 1990, F.W. Woolworth was replaced with Woolco along with many other F.W. Woolworth locations, Woolco lasted for 4 years at the mall before being replaced with Walmart after their buyout. In 1995, Dominion was rebranded after the Newfoundland & Labrador division was bought out by Loblaws, in 2002, Dominion relocated from the small strip-mall near the mall to a free-standing space directly next to the mall, in 2005, Walmart closed following their relocation to 55 Roe Ave, a year later, the former Walmart space was replaced by Canadian Tire/Mark's, which closed their old location at 143 Bennett Dr. Shoppers Drug Mart closed and relocated by 2008, with the space quickly being replaced with Dollarama, also around this time, the former Dominion space was split between mutliple retailers including Home Hardware, between the years 2011-2012, Sport Chek opened its doors at the mall, Gander Mall was now declining around this time due to the new shopping area that was built on the upper side of Gander anchoring Walmart and Kent Building Supplies. As of today, the mall continues to decline with many tenants closing their doors permanently.
