Fiesta Mall is a open-air shopping centre in Hamilton/Stoney Creek, Ontario. It was formerly an enclosed mall until its closure in the early 2000s. The plazas current anchor is Fortino's. Other tenants include Dollarama, Rexall, and Fit4Less. When the mall was enclosed, its anchors were Dominion and Zellers.
History[]
In 1946, the Skyway drive in theatre was constructed at the outskirts of the Hamilton Stoney Creek area. The theatre was in operation for several decades until it eventually closed by the early 1970s. By this time, more development was built in the area, so it was decided that a small shopping mall would be built on the land previously occupied by the theatre.
Fiesta Mall was open by 1979 with the anchors of Dominion and Zellers. The mall included a mix of national and local tenants. Notable ones including Bank of Montreal, Bargain Harold's and BiWay.
On February 13, 1981, a Famous Players theatre, branded as "Fiesta 4" opened for business. This helped the mall bring in more business with the reinstatement of a theatre on the property. [1]
By the 1990s, the mall continued to lose business to its main competitor, Eastgate Square, which was just down the road from Fiesta Mall. Around this time, Dominion closed and Fortino's moved in.
In 1991, Zellers closed and moved to a new larger (formerly Towers) location down the road. With the malls main anchor gone, many tenants closed their doors permanently. On February 22, 2001, Famous Players also closed. [2] Shortly after, the mall closed permanently.
In 2005, demolition started on the mall, starting with part of the Zellers. A part wasn't demolished which was occupied by Winners and Rexall. By 2006, the rest of the mall was demolished, excluding Fortino's.
In 2013, construction started on a new much larger Fortino's location, which opened on July 25th, 2014. The old Fortino's was demolished and turned into parking for the new store.
In 2015, a new section of the plaza was built which houses multiple tenants.
Today, the Fiesta Mall continues to operate as a open-air shopping plaza. People in the area who want to go to an enclosed mall now have to shop at Eastgate Square.
