Fairfield by Marriott (formerly known as Fairfield Inn, Fairfield Inn by Marriott, and Fairfield Inns & Suites by Marriott) is an American chain of hotels owned by Marriott International. The first Fairfield Inn opened in 1987 in Atlanta, Georgia. Fairfield Inn was originally designed to be a borderline economy/lower-midscale limited-service chain, featuring continental breakfast and, in some cases, a pool, but lacking other features found in higher-level hotels.
History[]
The chain used scorecard terminals where guests rated their experience at the hotel, and this feedback was used to maintain high brand standards. Most early Fairfield Inn properties had a unique building structure: they were three-story hotels with exterior-corridor rooms on the first two floors and interior-corridor rooms on the third floor, although some locations were all exterior-corridor as well as an all interior-corridor version of the three-floor building structure. Later locations were built with all interior-corridor rooms and began to offer suites in addition to regular rooms.
During the 1990s, several all-suite Fairfield Suites properties were developed. These were ultimately rebranded as SpringHill Suites by Marriott in 1998, which was then spun off into its own separate chain.
In 2004, Marriott repositioned Fairfield Inns & Suites as an upper-midscale chain. As part of this shift, the company remodeled newer properties and removed older ones that didn’t meet the updated brand standards. Remodeled properties added coffeemakers in guest rooms, newspaper delivery, and express check-out services. Starting during the mid-2000s through the late 2010s, many standard Fairfield Inn properties were upgraded to Fairfield Inn & Suites properties.
In 2013, Fairfield Inns & Suites expanded into Asia. In 2019, the brand was rebranded to Fairfield by Marriott, with new properties adopting the new name. Older Fairfield Inns and Fairfield Inns & Suites built before 2019 are gradually being converted to the “Fairfield by Marriott” moniker. Around the same time, the chain celebrated the opening of its 1,000th location.
A typical present-day Fairfield by Marriott location includes a pool, exercise room, copy/print center, a "Corner Market" (a mini-mart with snacks and drinks), complimentary breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and dry cleaning services. In 2020, the brand opened its first location in Peru and soon after expanded into Europe. Today, Fairfield by Marriott operates over 1,300 hotels across North America, South America, Asia, and Europe.
