The Empire Company is a holdings company in Canada, They are also a conglomerate, which is a company that owns many businesses across many industries.

History

The Empire Company was founded in February of 1963. Their first acquisition was in 1976, when they purchased Lawtons Drugs. As Empire continued to grow, they had an even larger purchase when they partially acquired Sobeys in 1981. The year after, they became a public company on the Toronto Stock Exchange. By 1987, they had full ownership of Sobeys.

Throughout the years, Empire Company continued to grow and add more companies to their itinerary. Eventually, they became a conglomerate due to all of the companies they now owned.

  • Hannaford (1983-2000, this was only 25% and they decided to sell it off)
