Don Mills Centre was an enclosed shopping mall in the Don Mills neighbourhood of Toronto, ON. It was originally a outdoor shopping centre before being enclosed in the 1970s. In the 1990s and 2000s, the mall began to decline. The mall eventually closed and was demolished in 2006 to build The Shops at Don Mills, which is a shopping and lifestyle complex.

History[]

In 1955, the Don Mills Centre opened as a Dominion anchored strip mall, it also had stores like Koffler Drugs, which was the predecessor to Shoppers Drug Mart.

Throughout the 1950s, more suburban development was built in the area, making the centre even more popular.

In 1960, the centre expanded and added more stores. A year later, an Eaton's department store was constructed, Don Mills Centre was now turned into a full outdoor shopping centre.

In 1965, Dominion constructed a larger store on the other end of the centre, a Zellers was built in the old Dominion space, adding another anchor to the mall. At this point, Don Mills Centre 65 stores and counting.

Throughout the end of the 1960s, more things were added to the property, such as a 15 story office tower, skating rink, a movie theatre, and more.

In 1970, Fairview Mall opened near by Don Mills Centre, this made more competition for the centre.

In 1978, a major renovation and expansion was made to the mall, Don Mills Centre was fully enclosed, and a new food court was added.

In 1986, the skating rink on the property was demolished because it was under used. An office tower was built in its place.

In the early 1990s, Fairview Mall underwent a major renovation and expansion, this caused a decline at Don Mills Centre, and foot traffic and tenants started to decline.

In 1997 and 1998, a renovation redid the malls tile, fixtures, and entrances, a new logo was also introduced. This was the last renovation done to the property.

In 1999, Eaton's permanently closed because of bankruptcy. A year later, a Sears Outlet moved into the lower level of the space. This closed in 2004 and was briefly a DOT Furniture Outlet.

In 2003, since the mall was really struggling, Cadillac Fairview, the malls owner, made a plan to completely demolish the mall and build a shopping and lifestyle centre in its place. The plan eventually went through, and Don Mills Centre closed in 2006 to build The Shops at Don Mills in its place, which was fully opened by 2009, marking the end of this historical shopping centre.
