Dollarama is a dollar store chain that operates over 1 400 dollar stores across Canada. They are currently in operation in every Province and Territory except for Nunavut. It is also the largest dollar store chain in Canada

History[]

Dollaramas roots go back to 1910, when Salim Rossy founded the store Rossy S. In 1937, his son, George Rossy took over the company, and they continued to be a successful business throughout most of the 20th century. Also, Rossy S. is completely separate from Rossy, which is a discount department store chain founded by Salim's other son in 1949, which continues to be successful today.

When George Rossy died in the 1970s, his grandson Larry Rossy took over the chain, by 1992, he doubled the chain from 20 to 44 stores. At this point Larry decided to open a dollar store chain called Dollarama in Quebec. The store quickly became very successful, even more then Rossy S. So in the late 1990s, Larry closed all the Rossy S stores and turned some of them into Dollarama.

Biway

In August 2001, almost all Bi Way locations closed in Canada. Dollarama took the opportunity and bought many of these stores. this is why many Dollarama locations are former Bi Way stores.

In 2004, 80% of Dollarama was sold to a private equity fund based in Boston called Bain Capital.

By 2015, Dollarama hit 1 000 store locations across Canada.

In 2021, Dollarama announced that they would be opening 700 more locations across Canada. 1 of these locations was in the Yukon territory, which was their first store in Yukon.

Dollarama continues to be a very successful business, and they're still opening new stores to this day.

Dollarama stores look very similar to each other, their stores follow a green and yellow colour scheme and have a very basic design. Until 2008, you could only pay with cash in their stores, but they now accept debit and credit cards and NFC payment such as Apple Pay. Within the past few years, Dollarama has added self checkout machines at some of their stores.
