Conestoga Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in the Kitchener/Waterloo region of Ontario. Its one of the largest malls in the region. Throughout the years, the mall has had many expansions, renovations, and store changes. The current anchors of the Conestoga Mall are Hudson's Bay, Zehrs, Winners, Sport Chek, Indigo, Shoppers Drug Mart, among 100s of other stores and services.
History[]
In the 1970s, the area where the Conestoga Mall is now located was rural, with mostly farmlands and forests. In 1978, the Conestoga Mall officially opened. The mall was developed by Select Properties Limited. Conestoga Mall's original anchors were Robinson's, Kmart, and Dominion.
Throughout the 1980s, the area became more developed with more suburban development and an industrial park. As more people were in the area, this helped Conestoga mall become more popular.
By the early 1990s, Robinson's was converted to Hudson's Bay as part of the phase out of that chain.
In 1997/98, the Conestoga Mall had its first expansion. This expansion added a new hallway that ran from Dominion to a new Zehrs grocery store that was built. The new Zehrs location opened in May of 1998. The opening of Zehrs caused Dominion to close. Later on, Sport Chek and Winners moved into this space. In the same year, Kmart left the Canadian market. Zellers purchased the Conestoga Mall location and rebranded it as such.
In the early 2000s, a Cineplex Galaxy cinemas was built in the parking lot of the mall.
In 2006, Conestoga Mall started their most major renovation and expansion yet. This expansion demolished the current Hudson's Bay, extended the hallway, and built a brand new Hudson's Bay location which used a prototype store concept. A brand new 700 seat food court was also constructed. With these mall renovations also came renovations to the parking lot and roads. A brand new roundabout was built at the road entrance of the mall and more sidewalks were added to make the property better for pedestrians visiting the mall. The rest of the mall also had renovations done to modernize the mall. All of these renovations were complete by 2010.
In January of 2013, Zellers permanently closed their Conestoga Mall location. This location was replaced with Target which had an opening date of November 13th, 2013. Before the Target could open, an expansion to the space was made, which changed up the road layout of the parking lot a bit.
On April 12th, 2015, Target permanently closed after the chain left the Canadian market. In 2017, renovations began to the space which added a new mall entrance along with several big box retailers, such as Indigo and Sport Chek. The old Conestoga Mall Sport Chek was turned into a Shoppers Drug Mart.
In 2017, a brand new light rail transit terminal was built at Conestoga Mall for Grand River Transit's new light rail system.
In 2023, Ivanhoe Cambridge sold the Conestoga Mall to Primaris REIT.
Today, Conestoga Mall continues to operate as one of the most popular malls in the Kitchener/Waterloo region.
