Charlottesville Fashion Square was a one-level shopping mall 4.3 miles (7.0 km) northeast of downtown Charlottesville, Virginia, between Fashion Square Drive, Glenwood Station Lane, Hillsdale Drive, Mall Drive, Rio Road East, and Seminole Trail in Rio, a suburb of Charlottesville. The mall has one open anchor which is Belk.

Mall History[]

On March 5, 1980, Charlottesville Fashion Square opened to the public. The mall opened with three original anchors which were Leggett, Miller & Rhoads, and Sears. In March 1981, a fourth anchor was added which was JCPenney.

In January 1990, Miller & Rhoads closed down. Also in 1990, the mall was renovated, several new tenants were added around this time such as Express, Gap Kids, and Victoria's Secret. In November 1990, Stone & Thomas opened in the former Miller & Rhoads space. In 1996, the mall was purchased by Shopping Center Associates, from previous owners CFS Associates Limited. In 1997, the mall was later handed over to Simon Property Group. Also in 1997, Leggett was converted into Belk. In 1998, Stone & Thomas closed down and was replaced by Belk Men Home & Children.

The mall was renovated again, beginning in 1999 and finishing in 2002. The $8.5 million renovation improved lighting and seating within the mall, as well as new decor intended to give the mall a more modern feel, including the removal of umbrella motifs dating to the mall's opening.

In 2014, Simon Property Group handed the mall over to Washington Prime Group. In March 2019, Sears closed down. In November 2020, JCPenney closed down. In June 2021, the mall was auctioned off from Washington Prime Group and handed over to Jones Lang LaSalle. In September 2024, Belk Men Home & Children was downsized and replaced by Belk Outlet. In January 2025, Belk Outlet had closed down. Not long after Belk Outlet closed, Charlottesville Fashion Square was permanently closed on January 31, 2025.
