Chaleur Centre was an enclosed shopping mall located in Big River, New Brunswick, Canada.
History[]
The mall opened in 1980 with 2 anchors, Woolco and Sobeys. Kent Building Supplies opened as a third anchor a few years later. The mall was built in a lonely area but was still attracting visitors at the time. Woolco was replaced with Walmart in the year 1994. In the early 2000s, the mall began to decline. Tenants such as Fabricville, and Chaleur Lanes, which was the malls bowling alley, closed. Walmart closed in 2004 after relocating to 900 St Anne St in Bathurst. A year later, Kent Building Supplies and Sobeys also closed. Soon after, a Sitel call centre moved into the former Sobeys space. In early 2009, the last interior tenants and Sitel closed. The mall was demolished by the end of 2009.
In 2016, a large fueling station was proposed for the site[1]. However, this plan was met with opposition from the surrounding area, because of this, it seems that the proposal has been canceled. The site continues to sit dormant as of today.
