Over the malls operation, Burlington Centre has had several renovations. The most recent was in 2018, when the malls name was changed from Burlington Mall to Burlington Centre.
History[]
The Burlington Mall opened on October 31st, 1968 with the original anchors of Robinson's, Simpsons-Sears and Dominion. There was also a two-screen Famous Players theatre. Originally, there were around 60 interior tenants. As the first mall in the Burlington area, the mall was very popular, attracting many customers every year. In 1973, Simpsons-Sears was converted to just Sears.
In 1979, the two-screen Famous Players was upgraded to a three-screen theatre instead.[1]
In September of 1990, the Mapleview Centre opened just 3 kilometers away from Burlington Mall. This caused the mall to lose some tenants, but as all anchor tenants were still filled, the mall still continued to do well.
On August 13th, 1991, Sears permanently closed and relocated to the Mapleview Centre. Hudson's Bay purchased the lease for the store and converted the space into Hudson's Bay. Today, you can still see a Sears label scar on the building as the exterior has never been renovated.
In 1992, Robinson's was purchased by Hudson's Bay and most locations were rebranded as such. Since Burlington Mall already had a Hudson's Bay, the store was converted to Zellers instead.
On March 29th, 1998, Famous Players permanently closed and relocated to another theatre. Later on, Sport Chek moved into this space.
In the mid-2000s, Burlington Mall had some renovations done to modernize the property.
In 2011, Ivanhoé Cambridge, who are the original owners of the mall, sold the property to RioCan REIT, who continue to own the mall today.
On September 17th, 2012, Zellers permanently closed. Target purchased the location, which opened on March 28th, 2013. On April 8th, 2015. Target closed after leaving the Canadian market, and the space sat empty. In the same year, Sport Chek moved into the former Shoppers Drug Mart store. The old location was converted into multiple tenants.
In 2018, major renovations were done to the mall. The former Target space was turned into a new mall entrance and multiple retailers, including Winners and Indigo. The old Winners was turned into HomeSense, With these renovations, Burlington Mall was re named to Burlington Centre.
In 2021, the first Zellers pop-up location opened within the Burlington Centre Hudson's Bay. More of these stores opened across Canada starting in 2023. By the end of 2023, the Zellers pop-up closed and moved to Mapleview Centre. It was revealed that this was done to prepare for the Hudson's Bay store to close in 2024. According to Tiffany Bourré, who works for Hudson's Bay, they are closing this location because its close to the Mapleview Centre location. In June of 2024, the closing sale started at the Burlington Centre Hudson's Bay. However, the closing sale was eventually cancelled and the store will now close in February of 2025 instead.
Today, Burlington Centre continues to be a popular store in the Burlington area.
