Brookside Mall is a community shopping mall in North Fredericton, New Brunswick. Its current anchors are Hart, Sobeys, and Surplus Furniture Wearhouse. Its the only enclosed mall across the river from the main part of Fredericton.
History[]
Brookside Mall had an opening date of 1980, its original anchors were Dominion and Kmart Canada. At this time, there was little to no development in the area of the mall, because of this, Brookside Mall never lived up to its full protentional becuase of its poor location.
In 1987, Dominion left the New Brunswick market, a year later, this location was replaced with Sobeys.
In 1990, Brookside Mall received a major renovation and expansion, the existing part was completely redone, and two new corridors were built. The malls corridors came together in the shape kind of like a clothes iron. Zellers was added as a third anchor, and a food court was added.
This new renovation brought more success to the mall, but this was short lived. People would still rather shop at Fredericton Mall (Later rebranded to Uptown Centre) or Regent Mall which were both in the main part of Fredericton.
In 1998, Kmart left the Canadian market. After the location at Brookside Mall closed, it stayed vacant for a year before being converted into a new Sobeys location. The old location was split between Rossy, Nubody's Fitness, and Sears.
In 2001, the food court and Rossy - Zellers corridor was closed off and was converted to a call centre. This negatively impacted the mall since the malls interior was now much smaller then it was before.
In 2008, Rossy closed at Brookside Mall, causing a decline in foot traffic. The mall entrance to the former Rossy has since been sealed off.
Throughout the 2000s, many national retailers closed their stores at the mall, leaving only local and regional retailers for the most part.
In 2013, Zellers closed their location at Brookside Mall as part of the liquidation of the chain. A couple years later, a part of the store was replaced with Surplus Furniture Wearhouse. But most of the store remained vacant.
In January 2019, Hart opened in the remaining part of the former Zellers. This caused a positive increase in foot traffic as their was a mall entrance to the store.
Brookside Mall continues to be a community shopping mall within North Fredericton, even through most of its national retailers have left, it still has some local tenants, along with its remaining anchors, this mall will probably stay open for awhile longer.
