Former Alia N Tanjay location at the White Oaks Mall in London, ON.
Alia N Tanjay was a popular Canadian women's clothing retailer. At their peak, they had nearly 200 locations across Canada, but after the retailer began to decline, and several controversies happened with their parent company, the chain was eventually forced into bankruptcy in 2020.
History[]
The Nygard clothing company was founded in 1967 by Peter Nygard in Winnipeg Manitoba. Originally, they only operated as a clothing manufacturer that sold their products at Hudson's Bay and Sears. However, by the 1970s, the company began to rapidly expand, and new Alia and Tanjay stores (two separate chains at the time) were opened, with locations primarily in enclosed malls.
In 1978, Nygard expanded into the United States, and started selling their clothing at stores like Dillard's and Belk. However, the Alia and TanJay chains remained Canadian only chains.
By the 1980s, new Alia N Tanjay combo locations were opened. These became the standard, and separate Alia stores and Tanjay stores were phased out by the 2000s.
On November 6th, 2009, the Nygard flagship store opened in New York City, NY. By this time, Nygard stores began to open in the United States, which were very similar to Alia N Tanjay.
By the 2010s, under performing Alia N Tanjay stores began to close as shopping malls across the country began to decline and close. This began the decline of the company.
In February 2020, the Nygard New York headquarters were raided by the police and the FBI. This was related to Peter Nygard's sex trafficking allegations. Soon after the raid, Peter Nygard completely left the company and eventually got arrested in March 2020. This major controversy caused a very sharp decline in the company, and Nygard filed for chapter 15 bankruptcy on March 18th, 2020. Over the next few months, Nygard continued to go into even more debt, and closed more Alia N Tanjay stores. However, they couldn't make it out of bankruptcy, so the company began to liquidate all of their assets. In June 2020, Dillard's purchased some of Nygard's clothing lines, which are now exclusively sold at their stores. In October 2020, all remaining Alia N Tanjay stores closed, marking the end of the chain, the Nygard factory was sold off in January 2021, marking the end of Nygard.
Notes[]
- Chapter 15 bankruptcy is when a company based outside of the United States, but still has operations within the country files for bankruptcy.
